2011 State Relay Carnival

On Sunday 12 August, 14 members of the Riverton Masters Swimming Club participated in the Masters Swimming State Relay Carnival at Challenge Stadium, Mt Claremont.  The Club did exceptionally well, finishing third out of 11 competing clubs; and the 2 clubs which finished ahead of it have significantly larger memberships.  The third placing was the Club’s first ‘podium finish’ in its 10 year history of competition.

Riverton fielded 18 teams across the 9 events on offer, with a mix of age groups.  The Club’s swimmers competed in an average of 5 events each – an exhausting, but fun morning!  The events were held in a short-course (25m) pool and covered 4 x 50m freestyle mixed, 4 x 50m medley for men and women; and 4 x 25m freestyle and medley for men, women and mixed.  Medley swims involve all 4 strokes and mixed teams comprise 2 men and 2 women.

The Club managed 3 first placings in the events, with 2 of those teams setting a new State Record for their age group.  A fantastic result, particularly as they were up against the powerful Claremont club.  Riverton teams also scored 9 second places and 3 third places.  Complementing the great results was the Club’s second placing overall in both the 120-159 years and 160-199 years age groups.
