At the State Championships held over the weekend of 29/30 April at HBF Stadium, 12 keen Riverton members participated with some very good performances. Our members were Katrina (‘second claim’ member from Canberra), Barry, Damien, Kevin, Steve J, Paddy, Lee, John, Graeme, Tammy, Robert and Steve W. Nine of our swimmers scored at least one first place (10 points), meaning they are State Champion in that event for their age group. Katrina achieved a ‘clean sweep’ of her 6 possible events, scoring a first place for her age group in all of them. Damo managed this in 5 events, John and Tammy in 3 and Barry and Lee in 2 events. In addition, Katrina and Damo won their age groups (most points gained over events swum) – Damo in a tie with a swimmer from another club; and Katrina set a new State Record in the 200m Backstroke for her age group. Great swimming!
Overall, Riverton placed 7th out of 23 participating clubs with 468 points – a very good result, considering our relatively small number of swimmers.
The Club fielded 5 relay teams, with 4 of them managing a ‘podium’ finish. Honours went to our Mixed 4 x 50m Freestyle team, age group 160-199 years; Men’s 4 x 50m Freestyle team, age group 240-279 years; and Mixed 4 x 50m Medley team, age group 160-199 years, all winning their age groups.
